Delhi War Cemetery, situated in the central part of Delhi Cantonment, is a serene and dignified memory of the war-faring soldiers who lost their lives on the battlefields of World Wars. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) maintains it as a dignified place of contemplation and remembrance with utmost respect.
A Brief History of Delhi War Cemetery
It was opened in 1951 to serve as a resting ground for the remains of World War I and World War II soldiers who were buried everywhere in India. As a resting ground, it brought together more than 1,000 graves, all having a standard headstone and very detailed landscaping mimicking British war cemeteries elsewhere.
It serves as a reminder for the universality of war and India’s finding itself in the center of the wars.
Architectural Significance and Design
- impeccably landscaped Grounds
The CWGC takes great care in keeping the cemetery tidy. Green grass, neatly groomed lines of graves, and shrubs of flowers create a peaceful, respectful atmosphere.
- Stone of Remembrance and Cross of Sacrifice
At its core are the Cross of Sacrifice and the Stone of Remembrance, the embellishments to most Commonwealth cemeteries.
- Memorial Plaques and Graveley Inscribed Names
The regiment and name of the soldier are inscribed on their graves. Some of the plots are reserved for men whose bodies were never found.
