Hidden away in the ancient Mehrauli locality is Zafar Mahal, a peaceful yet poignant symbol of the final years of the Mughal dynasty. Constructed during the 18th and 19th centuries, this lesser-frequented monument was used as the summer palace of the later Mughal emperors and carries a strong historical and emotional value.
A Glimpse into Mughal Legacy
Zafar Mahal, Mehrauli was designed by Emperor Akbar Shah II and further augmented by his son, Bahadur Shah Zafar – the last of the Mughal emperors. Apart from royal summer retreats, this palace had another purpose being a venue of celebration for Phool Walon Ki Sair festival.
What makes Zafar Mahal stand apart is its unredeemed history. Bahadur Shah Zafar hoped to be laid to rest here, amongst his ancestors, but was banished and died in Rangoon, today Yangon.
