Situated in the Mehrauli Archaeological Park, the Jamali Kamali Mosque & Tomb is one of the most captivating and enigmatic ancient sites in Delhi. Constructed in the 16th century during the Lodhi and initial Mughal eras, this site is a perfect mix of spiritual calm and architectural elegance.
Who Were Jamali and Kamali?
The area was called Jamali Kamali after Jamali, the pseudonym of famous Sufi poet Shaikh Fazlullah, and Kamali, a person whose identity still remains controversial — some opined that he was a disciple of Jamali, while others believe he was a close friend.
Their tombs lie side by side in a single chamber, symbolizing their deep spiritual connection. The unorthodox layout of the tomb has created interest and even ghosting legends, attracting history buffs and the curious in equal proportions.
Architectural Features
- The Mosque: The mosque exhibits a transitional style of architecture from the Lodhi to Mughal times. Its front is constructed with red sandstone and beautiful arches, niches, and ornate plastering. The mosque is an expansive prayer hall with five arched windows, a central dome, and magnificent mihrabs.
- The Tomb: The tomb chamber is a tiny, beautifully decorated room with intricate tile decoration and calligraphy. It has Quranic writings and a sky blue ceiling — a peaceful setting rich in history and spirituality.
