Bijay Mandal – Delhi Sultanate’s Hidden Treasure

Hidden from South Delhi village Begumpur’s tranquil roads is Bijay Mandal, an enigmatic 14th-century structure. This palace and imperial observatory was originally constructed by Sultan Muhammad bin Tughlaq but now lies concealed from all the hustle and bustle, filled with history and architectural brilliance.

Bijay Mandal was built during the reign of Tughlaq dynasty. It was a part of Sultan’s urban planning. It could also have served as observatory tower and palace complex. Height of elevation provided the king with a view of his whole city and adjacent lands bordering the city.

Architectural Overview

  1. High Platform and Pavilion

It is replied by an enormous vaulted floor of domed pavilion units and elevated galleries. The upper chamber offers a bird’s eye view of the city — maybe the king’s house.

  1. Fascinating Floor Plan

The plan is interesting, suggesting a combination of home and fortress. Lie in ruins, the structure still shows typical Tughlaq-era building characteristics — solid walls, absence of ornamentation, and emphasis on height.

  1. Lower Chambers

There are also secret parts underground that one can utilize for the sake of keeping things in inventory or as a mode of exit, presenting it with a sense of secrecy.
