Standing tall above the populated roads of Mehrauli, Adham Khan’s Tomb is a forgotten monument to Mughal history that speaks for itself in its architecture and heritage. Built in the 16th century, this odd monument is full of historic significance related to Emperor Akbar’s reign.
Who Was Adham Khan?
Adham Khan was the son of Maham Anga, Akbar’s foster mother, and a powerful nobleman at the Mughal court. In a horrific twist of fate, Adham Khan murdered Akbar’s trusted general Ataga Khan. As revenge, Akbar had Adham Khan executed by having him thrown from the walls of the Agra Fort — once, but twice to ensure that he perished.
About the Tomb
- The Unique Octagonal Design
Unlike the typical Mughal tombs, Adham Khan’s Tomb is octagonal in shape, similar to earlier Lodhi architecture. Its distinctiveness has also made it the “Bhool Bhulaiya” due to the maze-like interior.
- Thick Walls and Arched Entrances
The tomb itself is built using thick sandstone walls, arched entrances, and a colossal central dome, which shows evidence of a combination of Indo-Islamic architecture. It has an unevenness which separates it from the more refined Mughal buildings.
- Mughal Simplicity with Lodhi Influence
Whereas Mughal tombs are often complex, this building stands out because of its simplicity, maybe proof of the fall from grace of Adham Khan.
